This powerful image was taken from an airborne plane this September 11. It is a powerful tribute to the horrible event. The picture shows New York City covered in clouds and rising above it is the One World Trade Center symbolic of our great American spirit after 9/11.

It’s a beautiful site, but also a sad one as we remember what happened today.

On this day, seventeen years ago, 246 people went to sleep preparing for their morning flight. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning. 343 firefighters went to sleep before their morning shift. 60 police officers went to bed before their morning patrol the next morning. 8 paramedics went to sleep to get ready to save lives the next morning.

None of them saw the rest of the next day, Sept 11, 2001.

In one moment life was never the same for their families, their friends or the rest of our country.

America was forever changed in a single moment.

I remember that moment vividly. I was in sixth grade and my teacher invited my class into the classroom to discuss “something horrible.” We sat down and she said that we needed to be prepared to go home that day and discuss with our parents the horrible thing that had happened that day.

An hour later, I was at home and my dad came home early. On the TV, we watched the horrible footage of the twin towers smoking and falling. My parents were horrified. They had both fell in love in New York City and had lived not that far away from the shadows of the twin towers.

I remember sitting there with my family and wondering why anyone would want to do that to the country that I love. I was inspired, though, by the way that Americans came together that day. We weren’t liberal or conservative. We were American.

Remember this as you go about this day that in a single moment that your life may never be the same. As you enjoy the breath that God has given you today, be thankful for the thousands that passed away on this fateful day 17 years ago. Remember that despite our political differences, we are all American. We will fight together forever.
